New Service Automatically Orders New Batteries for Smart Smoke Alarms

Eindhoven, 4 October 2018 – No more annoying low battery beeps, alarms with empty  batteries, or trips to the shops for smoke alarm batteries. A new service today, designed to work with Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, will automatically order new batteries when they begin to get low. Customers of the new service, developed by 50five, CUBES by KPN, Energizer, Olisto and Tikkie from ABN AMRO,  will automatically be sent a request to approve a Tikkie payment request weeks before the batteries are depleted.

The new service was developed to help solve the issue of having smoke alarms without working  batteries. Developed using Works with Nest, the Nest third-party developer API, the brand new service leverages the low-battery alerts sent by Nest Protect to customers to initiate a multi-layer process. Olisto links the services together, KPN sends the SMS, the payment process is provided by Tikkie, Energizer delivers the batteries and  50five processes the order.

The cooperation of the parties fits seamlessly with the campaign of the National Fire prevention week started on 1 October. The campaign focuses on the importance of this year closing windows and doors and placing audible smoke detectors. From research of the fire department academy shows that only 45 percent of the suspended smoke detectors really work. The advice is to connect smoke detectors to the mains or to use batteries with a long lifetime use such as Nest Protect which has a multi-year battery life..

A second advantage of this new service is that Nest Protect automatically retains five family members or friends send SMS and email when smoke or carbon monoxide is detected. This augments the existing Family Accounts feature of Nest which allows  up to 10 people access to Nest products and alerts via the Nest App. That way, someone can always go quickly take action if the resident is in trouble and cannot respond adequately himself. By this solutions are also audible for others and that naturally also fits in well with the message from the Fire Prevention Weeks about placing audible smoke detectors.

“This collaboration shows the added value of smart appliances in the home. This one smart solution significantly improves safety, “says Egbert Hietberg, commercial director at 50five. “It is becoming easier to make such links with others smart devices, so that the possibilities increase and it becomes more and more useful to fit. We will soon see many more beautiful combinations and applications as the smart solutions become part of the smart ecosystem. ”

“The smart home has since passed the hype phase. The high expectations are decreasing and realism occurs. We are now entering a new phase, where the really practical applications of the smart home is embraced by a larger audience “, says Tom Meijeraan, co-founder of Olisto. “The smoke detector, which itself orders batteries, is a good example of this. Less sexy than for example, automatic opening doors, but it does solve an essential problem.”

“At KPN New Business we continuously look at ways to improve the lives of consumers and consumers make companies inspiring and simpler, “says Céline Brault. Marketing Manager at KPN New Business. “The smart smoke detectors are a promising idea in that respect!”

“This cooperation clearly shows that Tikkie offers more possibilities than only the interchange of amounts by consumers. Someone can safely pay immediately so that the smoke detector can continue to work properly “, says Guido Berber, Business Developer Tikkie.

Olisto starts pilot with Viesgo and makes app available in Spanish

Amsterdam, 11th of January 2018 – Olisto today announced the start of a pilot with Viesgo. This an innovative Spanish utility company focuses on delivering quality services and customer satisfaction

Viesgo launched the Toon smart thermostat in Spain in October 2017. Viesgo’s pilot participants will have their Toon thermostats connected to Olisto and thus to a broad range of other connected products and services.

Viesgo is not the first utility to sign an agreement with Olisto. The Dutch utility Eneco already made the connection with Olisto available for all their 400k+ Toon users last November and another, not yet to be disclosed utility, is currently also exploring the extra possibilities of Olisto by means of a pilot.

The interest of utilities is no coincidence. An increasing number of utilities offer energy management solutions to create both substantial savings for consumers as to start new (recurring) revenue streams. Smart thermostats like Toon provide real time energy data, making the users aware of potential cost savings by changing their behavior. The next step is that the end-users can create and use automated rules based on real time energy data. This is where Olisto comes in. These rules can be as simple as a notification on your phone when you leave home and the energy usage is still high (“didn’t you forget to switch off something?”), but as more and more connected devices enter the household this may also result in a complete home energy management system, switching devices off when the local electricity demand exceeds production and switching devices on when the energy production is higher than the demand.

Since Viesgo is a Spanish company and since it is Olisto’s aim to make the Olisto app as easy to use as possible for all users, the app is now also be available in Spanish language.

Olisto announces partnership with Home Connect program

Las Vegas/Amsterdam, Jan. 9th 2018 – Olisto today announced a new partnership with the Home Connect program.

Through this new partnership all smart devices, apps and service already present within the Olisto app will be connected to Home Connect’s connected home appliance portfolio of leading brands from BSH Home Appliances such as Siemens and Bosch. This includes ovens, dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and automatic coffee machines.

Consumers can now save money by starting the washing machine, only when the energy production of their solar panels is high. Or create a safer home, by automatically stopping the oven when the smoke detector signals smoke. Even letting the coffee machine prepare your favorite cup of coffee based on face recognition belongs to the possibilities.

Tom Meijeraan, co-founder of Olisto: ‘We are very happy to add Home Connect to our platform of interconnected brands. This means a broad range of home appliances of well-known brands will now be able to interact seamlessly with all the other connected products and services within our platform.’

Luuk Brinkman, Head of Digital Marketing at BSH: ‘We welcome Olisto to the dynamically growing ecosystem of Home Connect. We especially like the simplicity of the user interface design, for which Olisto was recently rewarded with the Red Dot Design award. Also, the built-in support of multiple languages is very relevant to us, since Home Connect is available in over 32 countries’

The Home Connect devices can be used in combination with Olisto as of today.
